Here's an excerpt from the Introduction to The Law is an Ass—Make Sure it Doesn't Bite Yours!:

In Dickens’s Oliver Twist, Mr. Bumble was accused of being responsible for his wife’s stealing because "the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction." He replied, "If the law supposes that, the law is an ass—an idiot."

But the law can decide that you are responsible for your wife or your employee’s actions. Being aware of the basic principles of the law puts you on the front foot and allows you to take action to avoid most of the usual problems.

This book has emerged from my experience practising law in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. I have worked as a lawyer for New Scotland Yard, for a large US Multinational, been a partner in two law firms and I now own my own law firm. I have conducted disciplinary proceedings against lawyers and been a tenant barrister in the Middle Temple, London. My travels have shown me that the law everywhere is very similar. Correct handling of the law and lawyers does not differ from country to country and many legal mistakes are universal.

My intention is to give you basic information about the law without burdening you with too much detail. The subjects I have included will give you a strategic overview of how the law works, internationally, so if you are in business in Australia dealing with international clients, or you are an employee of a multinational company and you travel to many places, this book will help. I’ve tended to concentrate on those legal issues that most often trip people up, the ones that can so easily go wrong.
